 FRATERNIZATION

There's been an ongoing discussion about how guys today are way too friendly with "the enemy" around the batting cage - even the pitchers and hitters. This is definitely NOT "old school" - Buck mentioned his intense dislike of Sal Bando until they ended up together in Milwaukee.

Isn't the fact that guys move around so much nowadays a contributor to this? Buck said that once he got to know Bando they became good friends. But today guys would be liable to have been together in the minors before ending up with separate organizations, or to have been together as free agents somewhere down the road.

How much does this effect play? With guys afraid to throw inside anyway can it be a big deal? I'm really undecided about that.

IMHO if your that good of friends then you both understand the game and you'll get over it if anything negative happens, ie. hit by pitch, stealing 3rd easily, blah blah blah.

Good point - and if you are that good friends, as O suggested, go out to dinner when you are "off duty."

Vance Wilson was quoted as saying this in today's Detroit News:

"I always said that my biggest regret about the big leagues is that I didn't get to play 25 years ago when you hated the other team. It's just another real low. The money now is nice. I don't want to give it back. But it was a game back then. It's entertainment now."

Looks like Vance Wilson would have made a good teammate for Buck.

Great piece Jimmy. Who would be the starting back catcher?

Vance is a good teammate for anyone. Good to see him get some ink.

Since I patterned my hitting after Felix Millan, I had a really small earhole in the batting helmet.

We will never again see baseball played the way it once was,but even if guys from opposing teams are good friends ,the mind set has to be, that once the ump yells "play ball", at that moment, everyone not wearing the same uniform as you, becomes the enemy. After the game, go out for a meal together...
