The Buckaroo
Post by barnesy on Dec 1, 2008, 3:26pm

For those unable to catch it, The Buckaroo returned to his new time slot 10-1 with Jeff Joyce. It sure was special. 13 times in the first hour. If they could cull those out, we'd have time for Fantasy Focus.

And if they could cull Jeff Joyce out... :-/
Re: The Buckaroo

Has anyone noticed that the majority of the new people and the hosts new to a show have almost entirely been people from the north (ie New York and Boston area)? It has been mentioned on another site that the calls and tone of the shows (I freely admit to not listening) has been moving toward talk about the NY based teams and Boston. Maybe this is the direction of the new people.

My question to Buck would be, if you wanted a 10-1 slot, how come you didn't fight for Mark to come along for the ride?
Re: The Buckaroo
Post by barnesy on Dec 1, 2008, 11:27pm

Great points David. The twist during this transition seems to slant coverage similar to ESPN. (Mets, Yankees and Red Sox) With The Buckaroo firmly lodged in his 10-1 slot, I find my late mornings less cluttered. Jeff Joyce didn't do too badly. I believe they are still trying to find and hire Buck's new partner. It will be designed to capture the California drive time market. I remain convinced that Mark was excellent in teeing topics for Buck to "analyze." He made The Buckaroo look good.
Re: The Buckaroo
Post by yankeegirl on Dec 4, 2008, 5:15pm

I couldn't agree more about MP being the star of BBTM! When Mark would go on vacation, I used to find myself drifting during the 3 hour broadcast, as it could get a bit dull.

I had a chance to listen in to 175 on my friends car radio the other day, and I personally did not find it encouraging. As much as I am a Yankees fan, what made BBTM and 175 so "special", was the coverage of all teams, all of the time. That is how I learned so much more about what was going on in the world of baseball.
Before XM, I knew very little about the West Coast teams, except for the Dodgers and Angels, and never followed most of the Midwest teams.

I admit, when the Extra Innings Package first became available, I only watched the Yankees. After XM, I watched all of the games, and soon after, knew who all the players were, their position, stats, managers, coaches, and so much more.

IMHO, not only was MP the best at what he did, his love affair with the game, is what made him even that much better! Some have said that he was arrogant at times. True, but so what! Put all of who he was together, and you get the CREAM OF THE CROP!

Once you have had the best, it's very difficult to settle for less. We have truly been spoiled. I still wake up and by habit alone some mornings, reach over to turn on my XM, only to realize that what once was, is no more. If they turn 175 back to what it was, I would subscribe again in a heart beat! I'm missing it allot!

You are being kind Mary. It's terribly uninformative and less entertaining. What were they thinking?
Re: The Buckaroo
Post by marythetribefan on Dec 12, 2008, 6:25pm

Hmmm. Today Buck was on with Charlie McCarthy. Will it be Mortimer Snerd on Monday, or Candice Bergen, now that Boston Legal is over?

Or was it Tom McCarthy ? Who is he? (hint: a New Yorker, right?)

Seriously, Buck was talking to CHarlie Manuel and he said something about Charlie being "a great hitter and a student of hitting." Now Charlie was a great hitting coach with The Tribe,, and a big help to Jim Thome. But I had the impression he was not much of a hitter himself. Is Buck slipping, or am I?

This program called Hot Stove is insufferable. We can only hope they pull the plug over the holidays. Jeff Joyce deserves better.

I listened to Holden and The Duke for awhile this morning too. Puh-leeze! At least CHarlie STeiner is back. So far. ::)

I tuned in to see if Charlie was on and it was nice to a familar voice. What little I tune in now, I am appalled at the seemingly disregard for the callers opinions. They beg folks to call and then belittle what they have to say (at least whta I've heard, again a small sample size). But I find it sounds just like a New York AM call-in show.

For those still listening, I think The Buckaroo shifts time slots after the first of the year. Holden keeps talking about going to The Dominican for two weeks. I'm unsure if it is work related. Normally two weeks without Holden would be a nice break but elevating The Buckaroo and Seth to that time slot doesn't bring much promise for "the new and improved" Home Plate.
Re: The Buckaroo
Post by yankeegirl on Dec 31, 2008, 6:21pm

It makes me sad to know that things are not looking very promising on 175 as of yet. My son has noticed how very much I miss it, especially when we are in the car, and there is no more tuning in tho the re-broadcast of BBTM, like when MP and Buck still had the show.

The MLB channel will be officially on air tomorrow, and at least when I am home, I will have baseball programing which beats most of the other garbage on TV today. Having said that, if things could finally get sorted out on 175, and it can somehow once again bring us the type of programing that we were accustomed to, I would without a doubt go back immediately.

I wish for this everyday, as I have not stopped missing it for even a moment. We can only hope that as the New Year rolls in, they may come to their senses, and return Home Plate to the quality programing channel it once was.

The sad reality is that what you miss no longer exists. As I attempt to listen, I can't help but think of all the new subscribers that Christmas brought would never know what it was. I have had to quit listening to Holden several times and I have yet to get through The Hot Stove format with The Buckaroo. I actually prefer Dibble and Casey Stern to anything in the morning. It was good while it lasted.

The Buckaroo finally broke down and admitted his long time crush on Andruw Jones was over. With declining numbers over the past four years, most of us saw it coming sooner. I fear that Frenchy may be traveling down the same path.
Re: The Buckaroo
Post by marythetribefan on Jan 3, 2009, 6:33pm

And what a shame it is for both of those players to have declined so much*! I see Andruw has accepted deferred payment so the Dodgers can probably free themselves from that contract.

*Though I seem to remember that when Frenchy first ame up and never took a walk there were some who doubted his staying power.

Striking similarities. Quite a while ago, someone asked Chipper what it would take for Andruw to get out of his funk. He answered "walks."

I never heard that Victor was ever doing anything but passing through on the way to MLB. I'm not sure anyone is locked in here. Victor made mention that Arlene helped with his English in his youth.

Oh I see. When I heard mention that Victor wasn't too bad, I thought he was going to be part of one of the new radio line ups. I obviously misunderstood, and that is why I asked.

Very sad to hear this Barnesy, and I can appreciate how terribly disappointed you must feel about all of this. Many of us, never saw it coming! I know I didn't. Let's face it,who would have ever imagined, they would totally destroy the best Baseball Radio programing we have ever known, and will probably not see the likes of any time soon.

I know there is nothing left to miss, but I guess I am clinging to what once was, and I am missing that. :(

Post by marythetribefan on Jan 5, 2009, 7:19pm

I have enjoyed Victor and the rest of the regulars on MLBNet - I can see why you all praised both he and the previous work of Harold Reynolds.

I did listen to XM175 this morning for a bit - Joel Sherman from the New York Post co-hosted with Seth somebody. I eventually tired of their ongoing discussion of why the WBC as worthless. Not that they didn't have a point - just that after 45 minutes or so I was glad to hear Jeff Joyce and Billy switch it up, comparing Andruw Jones to a '75 Pinto with bad tires. If I had never heard the original 175 I guess I would have found this passable off-season chatter, but knowing what was done in previous years in the off-season, and seeing the Hot Stove Hour on MLBNetwork, XM is suffering by comparison.

The Buckaroo was off on Monday. I thought the show flowed nicely without him. I'm not sure I can find an argument with them on the WBC. I just like to support stuff bearing our flag. They made such a mess of the first one. Maybe Davey will bring home the trophy and erase the embarrassment from the first time.

I didn't disagree with their opinions on the WBC, just iterating and reiterating the same thing. Today (Tues) they had a bit more to discuss and (it was Seth and Joel again) they did a fine job. Even alluding to their New York connections, they nicely covered a lot of territory. Though I can't WAIT to hear their take on the Tribe signing Pavano!

It occurred to me that The Buckaroo may be on his annual fishing trip to Costa Rica. Isn't it about this time that he has gone in previous years? He should try The Bahia de Pinas in Panama, home of over 200 world fishing records.

If The Buckaroo is in Costa Rica, he should be safe from the earth quake, that took 10 lives and left 14 missing. Evidently it was north of San Jose which wouldn't be near too many fishing spots.

I still tune in everyday. It's not very good but I document the annoyances. I tried keeping track of the times that Buck said "yeah" or "sure is" to start his responses but it became too much like work. It is safe to say he runs in the high 80 percentile. I also inform "management" of misrepresented facts, daily.

The Buckaroo is coming out of hibernation to work the winter meetings. K Squared will not attend. Last year at this time, not being selected for the travel team didn't bode well for longevity.

The Buckaroo has been rehired by the Blue Jays and will do 110 play by play broadcasts. Based upon his inability to host Baseball This Morning when Mark was out, this is indeed a curious move by Toronto. Obviously, Rogers Sportsnet hasn't heard him lately. From the blogs I've read, the Oriole fans are dancing in the street.

Wonder if Buck got canned by the O's or just contract time?

Great choice as I really enjoy Buck Martinez's announcing and Buck's
insight into the game. As this season unfolds for the Blue Jays being
a very young team some of Buck's comments will help the Blue Jays
fans understand what some of these young players are going through
as Buck has been there.javascript:add("%20;D")

I like Buck and think he brings alot to the table as an analyst. I'm not sure how he'll be doing play by play, though. It's liable to be quite a leap for him.

Cheers,

Buck just announced that today is his last show!

Billy Ripkin will co-host on Monday.

A little disappointing sign off. Naively, you might have expected recognition of the loyal fan base destroyed over the past year.

Billy and Jim Duquette are not only entertaining but informative too. So far the change seems to agree with Scott.

I listened this morning and was amazed by the amount of dead air Scott allows. I know you have warned us that this is so, Barnesy, but I couldn't believe it. Barb's call was one of the highlights.

For fans of The Buckaroo, you can hear him as a guest on Inside Pitch tomorrow. Obviously, he'll tell us about all his time on the golf course. Yeah, Sure!

Do you know what time he will be on?

THanks,

I've quit listening to Inside Pitch. No reflection on Casey but K Squared is too full of himself. Add the Buckaroo to the mix and I'd rather watch The View or Oprah. It's on from 1PM to 4PM so enjoy.
